Elevate Small Spaces

When you enter a room for the first time, you typically will do a scan of the overall space. While a room can present large and you tend to focus on the overall features of the room, once your eyes have time to adjust you start to focus in on specific details in a room. The “small spaces” that people tend to make note of.

Now this can appear in any place in your home, but more often than not it has the most effect on spaces like your kitchen, living room, and dining room because these spaces usually carry the most furniture and decor, and see the most foot traffic in your home.

So when you have guests over, you want them to focus on the overall space and design, instead of fixating on the small spaces that may not fit with your home's design. How do we fix this? Well there are several pieces you can update/change to elevate the appearance of your small spaces…

  • Use reflective furniture

    • Reflective furniture can help make a space feel larger by reflecting light around the room.

  • Use mirrors

    • Mirrors can make a space feel larger by reflecting light and creating the illusion of more space. You can try hanging a large mirror on a wall, or using a mirrored cabinet or console table.

  • Create custom storage

    • You can create custom storage solutions for small spaces, such as under-the-bed drawers or floating shelves.

  • Use vertical storage

    • Vertical storage solutions like wall-mounted cabinets, floating shelves, or hanging organizers can free up floor space and make a room feel larger.

  • Use furniture with dual purposes

    • You can use furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as an ottoman with a removable top or a floor lamp with an attached table.

  • Add floor-to-ceiling curtains

    • Floor-to-ceiling curtains can make a room feel larger and highlight tall ceilings.

  • Use lighter paint colors

    • Lighter shades of paint can help make a space feel larger.

The next time you walk through the front door of your home, step back and just do a scan. Do you feel like every space in your home, big and small, is being utilized to its full potential? If not, maybe it's time to make some changes!
